Bush administration seeks to hike taxes on barges to pay for repairs

A group representing barge companies and shippers is urging Congress to reject a Bush administration proposal that would significantly increase taxes on barge operators, saying the higher taxes may discourage shipping on the waterways. Coal-hauling barge operators in states such as Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, West Virginia and Wisconsin will be among those most affected by the proposal, according to the Waterways Council.
