Alcoa can't wait long to sign Warrick supply: new scrubbers pending

Alcoa Power Generating plans to work fast on bids being taken Jan. 31 on up to 13 million tons of coal for delivery to its four-unit Warrick station over a 10-year period beginning next January, or possibly earlier (FCT 1/19). The decisions will be factored into the company's plans for new scrubbers and fuel. Plans to install scrubbers on three Warrick units by 2008 could introduce petroleum coke or Powder River Basin coal into the fuel mix, an official told Platts Coal Outlook. Alcoa Fuels coal buyer Kevin Rayburn said that the company plans to install three scrubbers by mid-2008, and engineers need as much lead time as possible to determine whether, for example, to plan on 5 Ib SO2/mmBtu coal or 7 Ib SO2/mmBtu coal. Therefore, Rayburn hopes to quickly develop a short-list of coal supply candidates and reach some conclusions by the end of February.
