Virginia Clean Smokestacks bill could derail coal-fired power project

A Virginia state delegate has re-introduced "Clean Smokestacks" legislation that failed in the commonwealth's legislature last year. Though there have been some changes from a year ago that seemingly make the bill less restrictive, a Dominion spokesman said the bill - if it passes - could derail a long-studied minemouth coal-fired project in Virginia's southwest coalfields. Del. John Reid, R-Henrico County, introduced the bill Jan. 12. HB 2742 establishes maximum limits for sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions from coal-fired electric generating units that produce at least 25 MW. These limits would go into effect on May 1, 2011.
