Coal shipments followed other commodities lower

Coal shipments lagged behind other commodities as volumes slid during the week ending March 6, but strong pricing indicators from metallurgical coal contracts could bode well for steam coal demand down the road. Class I reported coal carloads fell 4.6% during the week to 135,335, bringing year-to-date shipments to 1.1 million, off 10.2%, according to the Association of American Railroads, a trade group.
