摘要

During my years as a professional garden designer, I have found that many garden owners are frustrated at the overall way their space looks and how it works for them - even if they've spent years working on it-and often in hindsight regret not thinking it through properly from day one. Of course, there are many varied approaches to garden-making, and every gardener learns plenty along the way, but I find that without some form of initial design, master plan or overall strategy the direction of the garden can easily get out of hand. Ultimately, the garden will reflect this disorganisation and will start to look a bit messy and may become difficult to maintain. So, over the next 12 issues of Gardeners' World I will be looking at simple ways to apply foolproof design principles to your garden, so that you can create a space that not only looks stunning, but that is also carefully planned and works well for you on a practical level.
