Consol Energy and Synthesis Energy Systems have formed a joint venture to build a coal gasification and liquefaction plant in West Virginia. The plant, with construction expected to start in 2009, could use 1.4 million short tons/year of run-of-mine and waste coal sourced from Consol's Shoemaker underground mine near Wheeling, West Virginia. The 800 million dollars project will be boosted by state tax and economic development incentives, Consol and state officials told Platts July 28, but the two companies initially have agreed to split the project costs down the middle.
