W Russell Brain (Figure 1) was born in Reading on 23 October 1895, the son of Walter John Brain, a solicitor, and Edith Alice Smith. He went to Mill Hill School on an Entrance Scholarship and entered New College Oxford in October 1914. Originally he was destined for law and at Oxford read history, taught by JBS Haldane and Julian Huxley.
