Baltic Dry Index falls

The last week has seen the Baltic Exchange Dry Index fall 7% to 1,022 points, as average earnings weakened across all of the vessel sizes. Earnings in the previously resilient Supramax sector dropped by more than $1,000/day to $12,268/day, while Panamaxes slipped back towards $9,0007day and Capes edged down to $5,300/day. A firmer week for bunker fuel prices (which have reached a two-month high in Singapore) served to offset the lower daily earnings and so keep key coal voyage rates largely unchanged - for example, Panamaxes at $13.40/t for NSW-Qingdao and $8.15/t for Indonesia-Qingdao.
