UMWA appeals Patriot wage-benefits ruling

The United Mine Workers of America has filed notice that it will appeal a May 29 US Bankruptcy Court ruling that favored Patriot Coal making drastic changes to its wage-and-benefits agreements that cover thousands of union-represented employees, retirees and their families. An amended notice of appeal, filed Monday in US Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Missouri, shows that the union will appeal to US District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri. The case is assigned to US District Judge Carol Jackson.
