摘要

In fluorozirconate glasses, which were discovered by Poulain et al. in 1975 [1], the most fundamental and simplest glass system is the ZrF4-BaF2 system. In actual fact, however, this system hardly yields glasses on a large scale. For instance, the prepara-tion of glasses of a few millimetres thickness and large area is extremely difficult. Strange to say, the addition of REF3 (RE = rare-earth elements) to the ZrF4-BaF2 system brings about greatly improved glass formation so that the ZrF4-BaF2-REF3 system easily gives thick and bulky glasses over fairly wide composition regions [2].
