Polymer/clay nanocomposites have attracted considerable attention, due to not only their enhancement of material properties via nanoscale reinforcement, but also new functionalities [1]. However, despite the fact that many polymers, such as poly(vinyl alcohol) [2], polystyrene [3,4], poly(ethylene oxide) [5,6], and polyaniline [7,8], have already been investigated for nanocomposites, biopolymer-based nanocomposites have seldom been studied. Recently, a biodegradable poly(l-lactide)-montmorillonite (MMT) nanocomposite [9] and a synthetic biodegradable aliphatic polyester-MMT nanocomposite [10,11] were indroduced due to the current concern over environmental problems and biomedical use.
