As the hot weather turned cool, the coal market continued in the doldrums. "We had hoped the hot weather would stay around for a few weeks," said one trader, "but it didn't last. April is normally a slow month, and now it is looking very normal."The non-existent winter burn was reflected in quarterly earnings reports recently from several producers. "We sure don't need any coal," said a major utility buyer."We might take a train if someone offers it to us at a real bargain, but I'm not sure where we would put the coal. Our stockpiles are as large as we want them."
