Enron's fall echoes through coal industry in many ways

The dramatic demise of Enron Corp. is having widespread effects on the coal business, some of them unforeseen. Examples include: Enron North America owes Kennecott Coal Sales 1.7 million dollars for tonnage that Kennecott shipped in 2001 but Enron never paid for, according to papers that Kennecott filed Jan. 2 in Enron's Chapter 11 litigation case. A Feb. 5 hearing has been set before a U.S. bankruptcy judge in New York to consider Kennecott's motion that Enron be forced "to assume or reject a number of coal con-tracts" by Feb. 19-including the 3 million tons that Kennecott was supposed to ship Enron in 2002.
