Comparison of batch and continuous oxidation processes for producing carbon fibre based on PAN fibre

The major world production of carbon fibres is from polyacrylonitrile (PAN) precursor [1,2]. The quality of the ultimate carbon fibres depends largely on the composition and quality of the precursor fibre [3-8]. Beside the composition and properties of the precursor fibre, during oxidation and carbonization many factors affecting the properties of the resultant carbon fibre are also very important. Control of these factors has been discussed in our previous work [9]. In fact, besides controlling the quality of carbon fibre through selecting the optimum condition of various factors, increasing the productivity of carbon fibres is most interesting to an engineer. The heating rate during oxidation is very closely related to productivity. Therefore, in this letter, we compare the effects of heating rate on the properties of the resultant carbon fibre in batch and continuous oxidation processes.
