Synthesis and characterization of MgAI2O4 spinel by PVA evaporation technique

摘要

Magnesium aluminate spinel is a refractory oxide material with good mechanical strength and optical properties. It is highly applicable in metallurgical, electrochemical, radiotechnical and chemical industries. In recent years, a variety of techniques [1-4] have been used to prepare MgA^CU spinel. These include solid state reaction techniques, hydrothermal synthesis, plasma spray decomposition of oxides, sol-gel method, combustion of metal nitrates and urea, freeze drying of sulphate solutions, controlled hydrolysis of metal alkoxides, decomposition of organometaJlic compounds in supercritical fluids, magnesium aluminium double alkoxide, an aerosol method. Although several chemical routes exist for the preparation of fine magnesium aluminium powder, the considerations of affordability and versatility of a route still remain as a major challenge for the material scientists involved in the development of new synthetic routes. An innovative chemical method [5, 6] has been developed in our laboratory which was used for the preparation of ultrafme, pure and reactive magnesium aluminate spinel system starting from comparatively cheaper raw materials.
