Hydroxyapatite (HA) granules have been used clinically as substitutes for autografts for filling bone defects. Unlike other bone implant materials, HA is biocompatible [1], nontoxic, resorbable, has excellent osteoconductive ability [2], possesses a structure similar to bone mineral and can form a direct bond with bone [3]. Using HA is advantageous since it is non-inflammatory and causes no immunological, foreign body or irritating response. However, the migrations of individual particles from the implant site before the tissue ingrowth starts cause inconvenience [4]. This shortcoming of HA granules is overcome by employing biodegradable HA paniculate composites. Several particle composites based on polyethylene, polylactic acid, chitosan, etc., have been reported. The biodegradable bone filler composites may also be used as a carrier in drug delivery systems. Loading anticancer drugs, antibiotics or bone morphogenic proteins may be effective for the treatment of malignant tumours, osteomyelitis, or fractures that are difficult to heal.
