Commercial varistors used in protection systems are based on silicon carbide or on zinc oxide. Varistors based on SiC have low non-linearity coefficients (α = 5), where a is the non-linearity constant defined by the relation I - KV~α where I is the current, V is the voltage and K is a proportionality constant [1].
