FirstEnergy's announcement that it plans to retire two more coal-fired plants was not surprising; what was surprising was the fact that one of them is a 1,710-MW supercritical plant. The July 9 announcement that the northeastern US electrical utility will close two large coal-fired power plants in Pennsylvania by October 9 means that 5.6 million short tons of mostly Northern Appalachian coal - based on deliveries for full-year 2012 and the first three months of 2013 - will lose major customers.
