Fungicidal management of leaf spot of safflower caused by Alternaria carthami.

The efficacy of carbendazim (0.1%), propiconazole (0.1%), hexaconazole (0.1%), chlorothalonil (0.2%), salicylic acid (100 ppm), difenoconazole (0.05%) and mancozeb (0.25%) against leaf spot (caused by Alternaria carthami) on safflower was evaluated in Solapur, Maharashtra, India, during the rabi season of 2004-05, 2005-06 and 2006-07. Among the fungicides, carbendazim 0.1% spray was found the most effective, as it recorded the lowest disease intensity (30.29%), and highest seed yield (955 kg ha-1), oil yield (266 kg ha-1) and IBC ratio (8.67). Mancozeb 0.2% spray recorded a disease intensity of 45.19%, seed yield of 821 kg ha-1, oil yield of 227 kg ha-1, and IBC ratio of 6.76. The residues of these fungicides in oil were less than the detectable limits. In vitro inhibition studies using poison food technique indicated that 100% inhibition of A. carthami was obtained by carbendazim 0.1%, followed by 80.81% inhibition with mancozeb 0.25%.
