The effects of organic fertilizers (farmyard manure, sunn hemp, maize straw, poultry manure and vermicompost) and NPK fertilizer rate (50, 75 or 100% of the recommended 150:75:37.5 kg/ha) on the performance of maize and chickpea were studied in Siruguppa, Karnataka, India, during the kharif and rabi seasons from 2003-04 to 2005-06. The organic manures had direct effect on maize and residual effect on chickpea during the third year. The increase in the NPK fertilizer rate (RFR) from 50 to 100% of the recommended rates increased the grain yield of maize. The application of poultry manure at 1.0 t ha-1 with 100% RFR to maize and 50% RFR to chickpea was optimum, resulting in the highest chickpea grain yield (1370 kg ha-1). The application of poultry manure and 100% RFR recorded the highest level of system productivity (8201 and 8480 kg ha-1, respectively), sustainability index (77.1 and 74.4, respectively) and water use efficiency (17.08 and 17.67%, respectively) in maize.
