Effect of seeding dates and planting layouts on growth, juice quality and grain yield of sweet sorghum.

A study was undertaken with sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) cv. RSSV-09 during kharif 1999 in Rahuri, Maharashtra, India, involving 4 sowing dates, i.e. 22nd, 24th, 26th and 29th meteorological week (MW), and four planting layouts, i.e. ridges and furrows at 45x30, 60x22.5 and 90x30 cm planting on both sides and normal planting (45x30 cm). The plant height (335 cm), functional leaves (6.80), weight of green cane (641 g) per plant, earweight (21.87 g) and grain weight (14.36 g) per earhead were significantly increased in the 22nd MW sowing compared to the 24th, 26th and 29th MW sowing dates. The 22nd MW sowing significantly increased the grain (1369 kg/ha) and green cane yield (33 080 kg/ha) than the 24th, 26th and 29th MW treatments. The total sugar (13.69%), reducing sugar (1.72%), non-reducing sugar (11.37%) and brix (17.65%) were significantly increased in the 22nd MW sowing date. The plant height (334 cm), weight of green cane (609 g), earweight (18.50 g), grain weight (12.60 g) per earhead were increased significantly in ridges and furrows at 60x22.5 cm. The same treatment resulted in significantly higher grain (1109 kg/ha) than the rest of the treatments of planting layout. The total sugar (13.11%), reducing sugar (1.68), non-reducing sugar (11.32%) and brix (18.12%) were increased significantly in ridges and furrows at 60x22.5 cm. The interaction effects were significant only for plant height, total dry matter per plant and grain yield.
