Experiments were conducted to examine thefeasibility of hot extruding metals on a miniature scale thusproviding a quick and cheap method of studying extrusion ingeneral. Aluminium was successfully extruded using a newminiature hot extrusion rig, producing aluminium wires(maximum diameter 2.6 mm) as opposed to rods. A preliminarycomparison of extrusion pressures on the miniature rig and on alarger extrusion press was conducted. The effects of temperature,extrusion speed and extrusion ratio on the extrusion pressurewere examined for both miniature and larger scaleextrusions .Extrusion speed had little effect on extrusionpressure, because the ranged of speeds examined was too small(due to speed limitations on the larger extrusion press). Bothextrusion sizes generally displayed similar dependencies ontemperature and extrusion ratio.
