Chile's Mina Invierno subbituminous coal to be shopped in the Asian market

With coal losing its favored status in Chile, backers of the Mina Invierno coal project in southern Chile are casting a wishful glance toward the Asian thermal coal market. Original plans called for the $180 million project to produce 6.0 million tonnes per year of sub-bituminous coal over a 12 year period, which would be sold almost exclusively to domestic power generators. Coal from the open pit operation was expected to replace about 30 percent of the coal Chile imports from Colombia, the United States, Australia and Indonesia.
