The deadline to bid on three coal concessions offered by Colombia's Institute of Geology and Mining (Ingeominas) passed last week. The process attracted considerable interest from some heavy hitters in the coal industry, including BHP Billiton, Anglo, CVRD, Rio Tinto and Drummond. "These concessions offer the possibility to develop large scale coal mines. That's why they are attracting such keen interest," a source told Coal Americas. "There are very few concessions left in Colombia that offer the opportunity for large scale development."
