World steel production up 7.9 percent in first six months of 2006

Total world steel production from the 62 nations that report to the International Iron & Steel Institute tallied in at 595.7 million tonnes for the first six months of this year,up by 7.9 percent from the same period in 2005.China was the largest producer with 199.5 million tonnes over the six month period.Production in the European Union totaled 100.7 during the first six months.
