In mid-February Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos told the Financial Times that Colombia and China could build a rail line to move coal from the Caribbean coast to ports on the Pacific Ocean. The rail line would provide a direct transportation route for Colombian coal to Asian markets, bypassing the Panama Canal. "I don't want to create exaggerated expectations, but it makes a lot of sense," Santos told the Financial Times. "Asia could be the new motor of the global economy."
