Japan imports 79.6 million tonnes of met coal in 2004

With final statistics in, the Japanese government is reporting that the country imported 79.6 million tonnes of hard met and PCI grade coal in 2004. Of course Australia was the biggest supplier at 42.6 million tonnes. However, Canada's Elk Valley Coal and U.S. exporters enjoyed a respectable showing at 5.31 and 3.88 million tonnes respectively.
