Elk Valley Coal finalized 10-year sales agreements with Japan's Nippon Steel and South Korea's Pohang Iron & Steel (POSCO) last week. Under the agreement, Elk Valley Coal will ship a total 4.85 million tonnes/ year of met coal to the steelmakers in 2005, increasing to 6.25 million tonnes/year from 2007 onwards. In addition, subsidiaries of Nippon Steel and POSCO have each contributed 25 million dollars for a 2.5 percent limited partnership interest in a new entity, Elkview Mine Limited Partnership (EMLP). Effective August 1, EMLP acquired the Elkview mine in southeastern British Columbia from Elk Valley Coal Partnership. A wholly owned subsidiary of Elk Valley Coal will be a general partner in EMLP and will manage the day-to-day operations at Elkview.
