Improving Land Governance and Securing Land Rights

In India 'Land' as an asset plays an important role both in rural and urban scenarios. Apart from economic considerations, people attach significant social and cultural values to it. Further, accessibility to land is not only economically important tothe people; it also leads to a host of other benefits. 'Land and maintenance of the land records' is a State subject under the Constitution. Different States have their own Acts/Rules/Manuals in this regard. However, 'Registration of deeds and documents' is a concurrent subject under the Constitution. The Registration Act, 1908 is a Central Act dealing with the registration of deeds and documents.
