Strikes could shake up the global thermal and met coal markets

The threat of strike action is imminent at two major coal operations in the Americas, which could serve to tighten already stretched global coal markets, both met and thermal. Union workers at the Elkview mine in British Columbia are threatening to go on strike Sunday, January 30, if a contract is not reached with Teck Corporation. Elkview, which produces 5.6 million tonnes/year of coking coal, is Teck Corp's second largest coal mining operation in British Columbia. Teck's labor agreement at Elkview expired at the end of October 2010.
