Arch Coal plans to ship 4.5 million tonnes of metallurgical coal to domestic and international buyers in 2008, increasing to 5.0 to 6.0 million tonnes in 2009. Arch operates four mines in Central Appalachia that produce met coal — Mountain Laurel, Coal-Mac, Cumberland River and Lone Mountain. Alpha Natural Resources is the largest met coal exporter in the United States. Last year the company shipped 22 percent of U.S. met coal exports. Thirty-eight percent of Alpha's production is met coal. The company operates mines in Central Appalachia.
