Venezuelan coal exports are dismal

Venezuela exported six cargoes of coal, in all totaling 193,918 tonnes, during June. (See page 14, this issue). It's the worst monthly showing since March 2009, when exports totaled 74,746 tonnes. "The Venezuelan coal industry is dying," a source told Coal Americas. "If current government policies remain in place, in the coal industry will drop out of the international market in the next year or so. Mining is taking place under very adverse conditions. There hasn't been in any new investment in equipment for some time now and miners cannot obtain spare parts to keep the old equipment working. It's a slow, steady death."
