When market sales are sluggish in one area, look elsewhere. This strategy has been adopted by steam coal producers in the eastern United States, and it appears to be a winning one. Analysts believe U.S. thermal coal exports to Europe could grow by about 3.0 million short tons in 2007. Demand for spot thermal coal in Europe is currently robust compared with anemic sales in the U.S. domestic market. European industrial coal buyers are interested in U.S. coal because pet coke is very expensive and availability is low.
