Statement of humane animal care.

The Academy of Surgical Research and the Journal of Investigative Surgery maintain that the adequate veterinary care and use of appropriate anesthetics, analgesics, and tranquilizers/sedatives is imperative in studies utilizing live animal models for surgical research. In order to assure these standards, manuscripts published in the Journal of Investigative Surgery must include a statement that the animals were cared for in accordance with the US Animal Welfare Act, the NIH Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, US Government Principles for the Utilization and Care of Vertebrate Animals Used in Testing, Research and Teaching, or other well-established regulatory guidelines.
