Prices continue to soften on the international coking coal market due to economic uncertainty in Europe and lower than anticipated demand in Asia. Most analysts believe coking coal prices will continue to be soft through the fourth quarter. However, a sharp uptick in demand from China or weather problems in Australia could turn the market around quickly. BHP Billiton is said to be offering premium quality coking coal to its term customers at a price in the US$245 to US$250/tonne FOB range for the month of December. The monthly price for November was set at US$270.
