The company is well on its way to becoming a major international coal supplier

Brazilian-based mining giant Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD) is well on its way to establishing itself as a major minerals supplier in the international market. Last week the government of Mozambique approved a mining contract for CVRD to develop the Moatize metallurgical coal project. The project is a large scale undeveloped coal concession located 1,700 kilometers north of Maputo. CVRD plans to export coal from the deposit to Brazil, Europe and Asia, particularly India. CVRD expects to produce about 10 million tonnes/year of metallurgical coal and 4.0 million tonnes/year of thermal coal using open-cast mining methods.
