U.S. exporters shipping coal from Northern and Central Appalachia couldn't have it much better in the current global market. More and more European steel producers are turning to the U.S. to replace tonnage typically supplied by Australian suppliers. Asian utilities and cement makers are purchasing South African thermal coal, opening the door for large amounts of U.S. thermal coal to find their way to Europe. U.S. exporters are enjoying a significant ocean freight advantage over Australian and Canadian exporters. And, the weakening U.S. dollar sweetens the pot for Northern and Central Appalachian coal exports.
