Alternative sites for coal ports and rail lines in Colombia are under consideration

As the conflict between the tourist and coal industries in Colombia continues, two alternative port sites have been proposed. One site is at the deep waters of Tribuga on the Pacific Coast of Choco and the other is at Tarena, on the western coast of the Gulf of Uraba. Both could have ports up and operating by 2010 and both could accomodate vessels up to 250,000 TDB. The proposed Bridge of the Americas would be a third component in the equation. The bridge, which would span 7.5 kilometers at the Gulf of Uraba, as opposed to Turbo, would facilitate the connection by highway and railroad between Tribuga and Tarena, forming the proposed Bridge Interoceanico.
