Pinnacle Mining Co.'s Pinnacle mine, Pineville, W.Va., was the national mine rescue team champion in the 2005 National Mine Rescue, First Aid, Bench and Pre-Shift Contest held September 20-23 at the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center. CONSOL Coal Co.'s Bailey mine, Windridge, Pa., finished second. Eastern Associated Coal Corp.'s Southern Appalachia mine, Wharton, W.Va., placed third. "Mine rescuers carry a double burden-the knowledge that they are responsible for their safety, as all miners are, and that when disaster strikes, they bear the responsibility of helping their co-workers," said David G. Dye, acting assistant secretary of labor for mine safety and health. "We are so proud of all mine rescue team members for shouldering this duty and doing it so well."
