According to the company, a major breakthrough by Joy Mining Machinery in applying AC variable frequency drives to shuttle cars provides significant increases in power, speed, and productivity while at the same time increasing operator comfort and decreasing mine inventory and maintenance costs. Worldwide, there are some 2,600 shuttle cars in operation with a variety of traction drive motors, according to Randy Welker, Joy's Haulage Application Engineering Manager. "Theoretically, a mine operator could have as many as six different traction motors in inventory on one side of the world and another four still different traction motors in inventory on the other side of the world," Welker said. "With this breakthrough in the AC variable frequency drive (VFD), that inventory of 10 different motors can be reduced to two worldwide."
