As a versatile machine that can traverse sites quickly, carry heavy loads at speed for stocking or fill up the biggest trucks on the market, the wheeled loader is an all-round performer. This level of versatility has helped make these machines popular and there are now several hundred being used at some of the world's biggest copper, coal and iron ore mines.While there are a few older machines still in use from manufacturers no longer competing in the market, Caterpillar and LeTourneau dominate the sector and their sales are closely matched in terms of outright volume (WME May 1999). But Komatsu has observed how the market has grown steadily over the years and recently re-entered this sector, no doubt keen to take its share of the pie.
