The investigation and remedial treatment of contaminated soils and sediments is a rapidly developing industry. Much of the excavation equipment and techniques employed are often transferred from the mining industry. The processes employed to minimise the disposal problem or remove contaminants are well known to mineral processors and extractive metallurgists. The required skills are already possessed by minerals industry professionals and many are finding interesting and financially rewarding jobs in "environmental engineering". In addition, many mining schools in the United States and Europe have successfully added such courses to their curriculum. The area of the remedial treatment of contaminated land offers many challenging opportunities for both mining equipment companies and professionals.
