A successful decolorization of methylene blue (MB) was achieved through advanced Fenton's process (AFP) coupled with sonolysis (sono-AFP) using zero-valent iron (Fe-o) aggregate as a catalyst. The decolorization was dependent on the pH, Fe-o, H2O2 doses, and acoustic power. Fe aggregate was reusable. A modified pseudo-first order equation was developed to describe the decolorization kinetics. To save electricity, short ultrasound irradiation was applied to the system. MB was completely degraded in the sono-AFP under optimized condition. The decolorization was obviously inhibited by the presence of Cl, but it was unaffected by the presence of H2CO3, H2PO4-, ClO4-, NO3-, and SO42- (C) 2015 The Korean Society of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry.
