SVEA NORD MINE PRODUCES OVER ONE MILLION TONNES OF COAL

Over a period of just under four months, Svea Nord Mine in Spitsbergen produced over one million tonnes of coal, currently rating it as the highest producing mine in Europe. The complete JOY longwall installation, which started up on August 16, 2001, produced 1,008,700 tonnes /1,111,901 tons by December 3rd of the same year, achieving a best monthly production figure of 364,392 tonnes / 401,678 tons.Operated by store Norske Spitsbergen Kulkompani (SNSK), the mine is located on the Island of Spitsbergen, between the mainland of Norway and the North Pole. It has total reserves of between 35 to 45 million tonnes 139 to 50 million tons, from which the company will produce around 1.5 m/tonnes |1.7 m/tons per year.
