Just a few months ago rumors consistently made the rounds suggesting that production might resume at the Quintette mine in British Columbia. In fact, during conference calls with analysts and reporters, Fording officials hinted at the possibility. "Production may eventually start up again at Quintette, but I doubt any moves will be made in that direction this year," a Canadian coal official told Coal Americas. "Everyone is watching production costs and the foreign exchange rate with the U.S. dollar like a hawk. No one wants to talk about it, but high production and transportation costs could take a big bite out of profits."
