Southern Company will take coal imports to a new level of 19 to 20 million tons/year during the next two to three years, the power company's director of fuel procurement, Tris Swindle, told those in attendance at McCloskey's Coal Conference of the Americas last month. Currently Southern Company imports 11 million tons/year. Observers believe the big growth in Southern Company's imports will center on the Georgia Power system. Southern is very close to signing a long-term contract with Drummond to import Colombian coal through Kinder Morgan's Shipyard Terminal in Charleston, South Carolina to supply Georgia Power.
