The United Mine Workers of America in June ratified a new 5 1/2-year labor contract with the Bituminous Coal Operators Association that preserves pension contributions and includes a $6/hour wage increase over its duration—the largest pay hike in the union's 121-year history. The union said the agreement, which will take effect July 1, was approved by about 70% of its voting members. It replaces a five-year pact scheduled to expire December 31,2011.
