During the late 1800s, coal mining was a large industry in Golden, Colo. On September 9, 1889, a major tragedy occurred at the-White Ash mine. While tunneling under Clear Creek, a wall breached between White Ash and another previously flooded mine, trapping 10 miners 730 feet below the surface. They died and are permanently entombed in the workings of the White Ash mine. The entrance shaft to the mine was located at the west end of 12th Street in Golden, near Brooks Football Field at the Colorado School of Mines (CSM). Until recently, there was a marker and plaque at that site that served as a grave stone. That area has now been converted to athletic fields for CSM.
