An experimental method based on pneumatic loading of a specimen was developed in order to study friction in free rolling of solids. Design of the apparatus was described, and preliminary tests of a ball-on-plane system were conducted. The method allows one to estimate kinetics of resistance to rolling at transition from rest to motion.
