摘要

This paper deals with the description, analysis, and classification of wear particle shape using Fourier descriptors. Contours of wear particles extracted from lubricants operating in friction pairs of various mechanisms serve as initial data. Methods of particle shape comparison, the evaluation of similarity degree of particles, the determination of shape of the particle sample average representative and particle classification have been developed. It has been shown that Fourier descriptors form a complete set of shape features and the analysis results agree well with the visual evaluation of the similarity/dissimilarity of particles. The developed methods can be applied in the diagnostics of friction units by wear particle morphology.
